Galo de Barcelos

The legendary painted rooster of Barcelos — Portugal's most recognisable cultural symbol, rooted in a gastronomy miracle.
The Galo de Barcelos is Portugal's unofficial national symbol, a brightly painted ceramic rooster originating from a medieval legend set in the town of Barcelos. The story tells of a pilgrim sentenced to death who declared that a roasted rooster on the judge's table would crow to prove his innocence. The rooster stood up and crowed, and the pilgrim was freed.
Beyond its cultural significance, the legend is inherently gastronomic — centred on a cooked rooster that miraculously returns to life. The painted roosters, produced by artisans in Barcelos and throughout the Minho, have become Portugal's most recognisable souvenir. The story embodies the deep connection between food, faith, and identity in Portuguese culture.
