Queijo de São Jorge

Queijo de São Jorge - Portuguese gastronomy

A firm, aged cow's milk cheese from the Azores island of São Jorge, with a sharp, piquant flavour.

Queijo de São Jorge is produced on the Azorean island of São Jorge, where lush volcanic pastures create ideal dairy conditions. The cheese has been made since at least the 15th century, likely influenced by Flemish settlers. It holds PDO status.

Aged for a minimum of three months and often much longer, São Jorge develops a firm, slightly crumbly texture with a robust, peppery bite. It is excellent as a table cheese, grated over dishes, or paired with Verdelho wine.
