Bairrada

A wine region in the Beiras known for elegant sparkling wines and robust reds from the Baga grape.
Bairrada is a DOC wine region in the Beiras, between Porto and Coimbra, renowned for two distinct wine styles. The native Baga grape produces deeply tannic, age-worthy red wines that have drawn comparisons to Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir for their structure and complexity. The region's clay-limestone soils give Baga wines their distinctive mineral backbone.
Bairrada is also Portugal's premier sparkling wine region, producing elegant espumantes using the traditional method. The cool, Atlantic-influenced climate provides the acidity essential for great sparkling wine. The region's wine culture is inseparable from its most famous dish, leitão da Bairrada (suckling pig), creating one of Portugal's great food-and-wine pairings.
