Espumante

Espumante - Portuguese gastronomy

Portuguese sparkling wine, produced primarily in the Bairrada region using the traditional method.

Espumante is Portuguese sparkling wine, with the Bairrada region being the country's premier production area. Using the traditional method (secondary fermentation in bottle), producers create elegant sparkling wines from the native Baga grape and international varieties like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The cool, Atlantic-influenced climate provides the high acidity essential for quality sparklers.

Though less internationally famous than Champagne or Cava, Portuguese espumantes offer exceptional quality at accessible prices. Producers like Luís Pato, Campolargo, and Caves São João have built strong reputations. Espumante is increasingly popular in Portugal for celebrations, and the country's sparkling wine production has grown significantly in recent years.
