Garrafeira

A Portuguese wine quality designation for exceptional vintages, and the name for traditional wine shops.
Garrafeira has a dual meaning in Portuguese wine culture. As a quality designation, it indicates a wine of exceptional quality from a single vintage, aged for a minimum period in both barrel and bottle. For reds, this means at least two years in barrel and one in bottle; for whites, six months in barrel and six in bottle.
The term also refers to traditional Portuguese wine shops — often small, atmospheric establishments stocked floor to ceiling with bottles. These garrafeiras are curated by knowledgeable owners who guide customers through Portugal's vast wine landscape. Both meanings reflect a culture that takes wine seriously, valuing age, provenance, and expert guidance.
