Licor Beirão

By Maria Santos
Licor Beirão - Portuguese gastronomy

Portugal's best-selling liqueur, a herbal spirit from the Beiras made with a secret blend of seeds, herbs, and botanicals.

Licor Beirão has been produced in Lousã since 1929, crafted from a closely guarded recipe involving double distillation of aromatic seeds and herbs including cinnamon, lavender, and rosemary. At 22% alcohol, it is sweet, aromatic, and smooth.

Traditionally served as a digestif, Licor Beirão has reinvented itself through cocktail culture, with the Caipirão becoming hugely popular. The liqueur is deeply embedded in Portuguese social life, present at family gatherings and celebrations.
