Moscatel de Setúbal

By Carlos Artigo20 March 2026Lisboa
Moscatel de Setúbal - Portuguese gastronomy

A luscious fortified wine from the Setúbal Peninsula, made from Muscat grapes and aged to honeyed, amber perfection.

Moscatel de Setúbal is one of Portugal's great fortified wines, produced using primarily Moscatel de Alexandria grapes. After fermentation is halted with grape spirit, the wine macerates on its skins, extracting intense floral and citrus aromatics. It is then aged in oak barrels.

The house of José Maria da Fonseca has been producing Moscatel since 1834, with some vintages aged for over 20 years. The wine pairs exquisitely with queijadas and blue cheeses. Moscatel de Setúbal is a jewel that deserves wider international recognition.
