Quilograma de Trigo

By Carlos Artigo
Quilograma de Trigo - Portuguese gastronomy

A traditional unit of wheat measurement used in Portuguese rural economies, tied to bread production and land rents.

In Portugal's agrarian past, wheat was measured, traded, and used as currency in rural communities. The quilograma de trigo governed transactions between farmers, millers, and landlords. Land rents and tithes were often calculated in quantities of wheat rather than money.

This system reflected the central importance of bread in Portuguese life. Though long replaced by modern commerce, it remains embedded in rural place names, folk sayings, and the collective memory of Portugal's agricultural communities.
