Vinho do Porto

By João Ferreira20 March 2026Porto & Norte
Vinho do Porto - Portuguese gastronomy

The most celebrated fortified wine in the world, produced exclusively in the Douro Valley since the 17th century.

Port wine has been produced in the Douro since the 17th century, when English merchants added grape spirit to preserve wine during maritime transport. This fortification became its defining character.

Multiple styles exist: Ruby, Tawny, White, Rosé, Vintage, and LBV. The caves of Vila Nova de Gaia are the ageing heartland. Port is protected by one of the world's oldest denominations of origin, regulated since 1756.
