Kumquat do Algarve
By Pedro OliveiraAlgarve

The Algarve's warm microclimate supports kumquat cultivation, producing tiny citrus fruits used in liqueurs and preserves.
Kumquats thrive in the Algarve's Mediterranean climate, where they have been cultivated since the 19th century. These miniature citrus fruits, eaten whole with their sweet rind and tart flesh, grow in ornamental and productive groves throughout the region.
Local producers transform kumquats into marmalades, liqueurs, and crystallised sweets that have become popular regional souvenirs. Though not a traditional Portuguese crop, the kumquat has been thoroughly adopted into the Algarve's culinary identity.
