Batata Doce de Aljezur

A prized IGP sweet potato variety from the western Algarve, celebrated for its sweetness and creamy texture.
Batata Doce de Aljezur is a sweet potato variety grown in the sandy soils around Aljezur on the western Algarve coast. The region's unique microclimate and soil conditions produce sweet potatoes with exceptional flavour — sweeter, creamier, and more aromatic than standard varieties. The crop holds IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) status.
Harvested from September to December, Aljezur sweet potatoes are celebrated at an annual festival in late November. They are roasted, made into soups, used in cakes and pastries, and increasingly featured in contemporary Portuguese cuisine. The sweet potato has become a symbol of Aljezur's agricultural identity and the Algarve's inland food traditions.
