Sal de Tavira - Portuguese gastronomy

Hand-harvested sea salt and flor de sal from the traditional salt pans of the eastern Algarve.

Sal de Tavira is artisanal sea salt harvested from the traditional salt pans of the Ria Formosa near Tavira. Salt production here dates back to Phoenician times. The prized flor de sal is hand-harvested with traditional wooden tools by skilled marnotos.

Flor de sal from Tavira is prized for its light, flaky texture and mineral complexity. The salt pans are also vital ecological habitats, supporting flamingos and other wading birds.
