Hans Neuner is the Austrian-born culinary virtuoso who has redefined Portuguese gastronomy from his kitchen at Ocean Restaurant in the Algarve. Born in the Austrian part of Tyrol into a fourth-generation culinary family, Neuner began his cooking journey at just fourteen years old, inheriting a natural flair for professional cuisine from his chef father and grandfather.

Before arriving in Portugal, Neuner honed his craft at some of Europe's most prestigious establishments, including training under Karlheinz Hauser at the Adlon Hotel restaurant in Berlin for nine years, followed by positions at the Carlton in St. Moritz, The Dorchester in London, and Restaurant Tristan in Mallorca. This extensive international experience provided him with a sophisticated culinary foundation that would later prove instrumental in his Portuguese transformation.

In 2007, Neuner arrived in the Algarve seeking new inspiration and discovered his calling in Portuguese cuisine. At Ocean Restaurant within Vila Vita Parc Resort, he embarked on a remarkable culinary evolution, transitioning from classical European dishes featuring pigeon, foie gras, and caviar to embracing the incredible story of Portuguese gastronomy. This bold shift paid dividends when Ocean earned its first Michelin star, followed by a second star in 2011, making it Portugal's second restaurant to achieve this distinction.

Neuner's philosophy centers on elevating Portuguese cuisine to new heights while respecting its traditional roots. Named Portugal's Chef of the Year in both 2009 and 2012, he has become synonymous with the sophisticated interpretation of local ingredients and techniques. His approach combines his Austrian precision with Portuguese soul, creating a unique culinary language that speaks to both tradition and innovation. Under his leadership, Ocean has maintained its two Michelin stars for over a decade, cementing his status as one of Portugal's most influential chefs.
