Santos Populares - Lisboa

1 June 2026 — 30 June
Various neighborhoods, Lisboa

About This Event

The Santos Populares in Lisboa represents one of Portugal's most beloved and authentic cultural celebrations, transforming the capital into a vibrant tapestry of traditional festivities throughout the month of June. Centered around the feast day of Santo António (Saint Anthony) on June 13th, this centuries-old festival brings together entire neighborhoods in a celebration of Portuguese heritage, community spirit, and culinary tradition.

The festival's gastronomic heart beats strongest with the omnipresent aroma of sardinhas assadas (grilled sardines), which are prepared on street corners throughout historic neighborhoods like Alfama, Mouraria, Bairro Alto, and Madragoa. These sardines, served simply on bread with roasted peppers and a glass of wine, represent the soul of Portuguese popular cuisine. The festivities also feature traditional arraiais (street parties) where locals and visitors gather to enjoy petiscos, dance to popular music, and participate in the famous Marchas Populares parades.

Beyond the sardines, the Santos Populares showcase Portugal's rich tradition of neighborhood gastronomy, with each arraial offering regional specialties, traditional sweets, and local wines. The festival serves as a living museum of Portuguese culinary culture, where recipes passed down through generations are celebrated in their most authentic form, making it an essential experience for understanding the roots of Portuguese gastronomy.
